On August 31, 2011 I (Dr. Allen) leave for a 1 month trip to India. The plan is to vaccinate the street dogs for rabies because rabies kills an estimated 25,000 people a year in India and the street dogs are largely to blame. The adventure begins at the Phoenix airport!

Approaching a Full House…
This is Ace… at least today his name is Ace… it’s still up for discussion but a certain hospital owner (who’s name we won’t mention) thinks it’s a fabulous name for a cat that showed-up at our hospital with only one testicle (get it? Ace…one…) and it goes with well with Deuce, one of our other clinic cats. We’re wavering between finding him a home and keeping him here…he’s a very cool cat! If you’re interested and can give us a compelling reason why you should own him instead of us, come talk to us!
Sweet Rosemary….
Anyone who comes to our office regularly has almost certainly met Rosemary, one of our more “curvy” cats that always wore a dress to help slim her silhouette.
Sadly, sweet Rosemary died yesterday. She came to us almost three years ago in a trap with a can of corned beef hash left outside our door on a cold December morning. She was fat when we got her which is how she got the name Rosemary… named after the lead character in the movie “Shallow Hal.”
She has been such a pleasure to have around the office and we’ll all miss her…
Grand Teton or Bust!
Last week Dr. Allen went to Wyoming to climb Grand Teton. After two days of a technical climbing school and a 6000 ascent to 11,500 feet, a snow storm forced her to turn around 2000 feet from the top. A good reason to return next year!
At least there was a lot of wildlife to see, and the views were spectacular!
Tammy gets a new kitten!
We all miss Sam… but no one misses him as much as Tammy, which is why we were all so thrilled to see that this little guy was able to squeeze his way into her heart… and boy did he! Stewey is special and believe me he knows it. He adapts to any situation because he has clearly decided that the world is here to accomodate him. He comes to work with Tammy most days, so drop on by and say hello…he’s pretty cute!
The Staff Goes to Out of Africa
Our Christmas party this year was a trip to Out of Africa in Cottonwood. I think the staff was jealous of Dr. Allen’s trip to Tanzania and wanted to get a taste of the Safari… Obviously it wasn’t the same, but there were some definite perks to this trip. Once the staff learned we were from a veterinary hospital they enlisted our help with a tiger that had an eye problem which gave us the opportunity to get way closer than on the real safari!
The tigers weren’t the only animals we were able to get close to… This hungry giraffe was a little more excited about getting fed than I think Kara was about feeding him!
Despite some pretty cold weather, we all had a great time. A few more pictures…
Dr. Allen Goes To Africa
Dr. Allen spent three weeks this summer volunteering with an HIV positive woman’s group in Tanzania. The group is called Jipe Moya, and she spent most of her days teaching English and visiting HIV positive people too weak to leave their homes. She also helped advise the group with their small business…raising chickens for meat…kind-of ironic for a vegetarian! Even though the weeks were spent working, she was able to get away on two on the weekends. The first was spent on a safari and the second climbing a 15,000 foot peak!
Here are just a few of the pictures…

The first week's class was full of children because they were on break from their regular school. Unlike the US, African kids think its a privilage to be able to go to school!

Most of the time the English class had older students who wanted to learn English to improve their business potential. On SafariThey say this is the most dangerous animal in Africa... He looks friendly enough to me!The top of Mt. Meru... aka Socialist PeakProof that Dr. Allen made it to the top of TWO peaks!
